Kia & Hyundai Respond to TikTok Car Theft Trend

Kia and Hyundai have responded to a theft of cars which is believed to be a TikTok trend where the thieves use a USB cable to hotwire cars. This trend has been on TikTok since the last year. Here thieves target specific models of 2010 or 2021 cars of Hyundai and Kia brands. These cars use a mechanical key, with no key fobs or push buttons to start them. The trend is famous as the ‘Kia Boys’ trend. You will find many videos regarding the trend which clearly show theft. You can see the vehicle’s result after being broken into in some videos. One county sheriff has told in their interview that due to the trend, such thefts are high, up to 800%, and there is no end to it. And the theft happens in less than 30 seconds, so it is difficult to catch the thieves. Also read, What is Sam Smith’s Viral Unholy TikTok Trend | Latest Trend Explained

Statement From Kia and Hyundai

A spokesperson from Kia said they are concerned about the thefts. Hence, they have distributed steering wheel locks to law enforcement officers in the affected areas. They even added concern about how the thieves use techniques from social media platforms to target vehicles without immobilizers. As we know, there can hardly be any theft-proof vehicles, but criminals are targeting vehicles that still use steel keys and have turned to start the ignition system. Most vehicles in the US have a key fob and push button to start the system which has a very thin chance of getting stolen. A spokesperson from Hyundai said they would distribute steering wheel locks soon and are providing security kits with all their vehicles shortly.
